04.05.2001 / In the context of its
recently launched project on promoting non-discriminatory access of
Roma to public health, the Office for Democratic Institutions and
Human Rights (ODIHR) supported a round table discussion on Roma
health issues organized by the Romani Centre for Social Intervention
and Studies (CRISS) and the Romanian Ministry of Health in
Bucharest. The ODIHR contributed to the evaluation of a four-year
health project carried out by the Ministry and CRISS in Romanian
municipalities and provided information on its own activities in
this field.
As a result of the meeting, the Ministry undertook to
initiate a parliamentary hearing on Roma and health issues. A Roma
community worker was proposed to be established in municipalities
with Roma inhabitants, with a mandate that would include health
issues. Participants urged the Ministry to integrate this new
position in the regular local administration stucture.
