Concern of Danish Gypsies after the last general election in Denmark

    27.11.2001 / Romano - Press release 2001.11.21

We are deeply concerned over the results of the election in Denmark and worried about the consequences for Roma in Denmark and in Europe.

We have unfortunate situations for Roma in Denmark:
-   segregated schools
-   unlawful deductions in social payment for Roma
-   lack of fair job opportunities
-   discrimination in the media
-   no protection of language, culture and history
-   discrimination in asylum cases and visa opportunity
-   discrimination in housing
-   discrimination in legal cases
These cases have been brought to the attention of the prime minister and the relevant authorities.

We are deeply concerned about the lack of engagement of Denmark as coming chairman of the European Union in the caus of Roma in Eastern Europe and their human rights situation both inside and outside the European Union.

We call upon the European Union and the Council of Europe to monitor the development carefully.

Eric Stottrup Thomsen
Chairman of "Romano"
