17.01.2002 / Members
of the newly formed association of Bulgarian Roma in the UK, E Roma
Opre, demonstrated outside the Bulgarian meeting followed with
Prince Kiril, son of Bulgarian Prime Simeon II, at which Mr
Nikolaeff gave an initial welcome to the Government’s programme
for Roma.
“We view most
of the programme favourably,” said Mr Nikolaeff. “But what we
want to see is progress and the full implementation of this new
project”.
Meanwhile, Mr
Nikolaeff told journalists at a Press Conference afterwards, he had
many concerns about human rights abuses in Bulgaria. These involved
attacks by skinheads and also asaults by police officers. It was
fear that now drove many Roma to leave the country and seek asylum
elsewhere, he said.
Mr Nikolaeff
said he expects a followup meeting with Prince Kiril in the near
future.
