First document on the arrival of gypsies in Spain

The first document on the gypsies in Spain was a safe conduct granted by King Alfonso V of Aragon to D. John of Lesser Egypt, on January 12th, 1425. Below the image can be seen a transcript of the document and the corresponding translation.

N’Alfonso, etc. Als nobles, amats e feels nostres universes e sengles governadors, justicies, veguers, sotsveguers, batles, sotsbatles, e altres qualsevol officials e subdits nostres, e encara qualsevol guardes de ports  e coses vedades en qualsevol parts de nostres regens e terres al qual o als quals les presents pervendran e seran presentades o als loctinents de aquells, salut e dilecció. Com l’amat e devot nostre don johan de Egipte Menor, de nostra licència anat en diverses parts, entena passar per algunes parts de nostres regnes e terres, e vullam  aquell èsser bentractar e acollit, a vosaltres e a cascun de  vos dehim e manam expressament e de certa sciència, sots incorriment de nostra ira e indignació que lo dit don Hohan de Egipte e los que ab ell iran e l’acompayaran, ab totes ses cavalcadures, robes, bens, or, argent, beaces e altres qualsevol coses que ab si portaran, lexets anar, estar e passar per qualsevol ciutats, viles, lochs e altres parts de nostra senyoria salvament e segura, tota contradicció, impediment e contrast remoguts. Povehints e donants a aquells segur passatge e conduyt si e quan per lo dito non Johan request no serets durant lo present nostre salvoconduyt, lo qual volem que dur per tres mesos (1) del dia de la data de la present en avant continuament comptadors. Dada en Çaragoça sots nostre segell secret a XII dies de janer en l’any de la nativitat de Nostre Senyor Mil CCCCXXV (2) Rex Alfonsus.

The King Alphonse to all of our beloved and loyal nobles, civil governors, representatives of authority, lowland farmers, mayors, deputy mayors and any other of our officers and subjects, and even to any guards of harbours, in any parts of our kingdom and lands, to whom this will be showed, or to their deputies, good health and afeection. Since our beloved and devoted John from Egipt Minor, with our permission will go to several parts and he believes that he will have to pass through some parts of our kingdom and lands, and we want him to be treated well and welcomed to you and one each of you we say and we order you expressly, under penalty of our rage, that te aforementioned Jonh form Egypt and those who will accompany him, sith all their mounts, clothes, goods, gold, silver, saddlebags and any other things that they carry, must be let pass by in any city small town and village and other parts of our manors, safely ande being removed from any impediment. Providing them a save passin and being led when the aforementionde mister John requires in through this our present safe-conduct, which we want him to carry during three months counting form today on. Handed over in Saragossa under our seal, on January twelfth in the year 1425 of the birth of Our Lord. King Alphonse.
